a brief statement to accompany my recent photography:

This body of work is part of an ongoing investigation of life. Up close, living beings have a certain intensity that I just can’t feel from a distance. The veins bulge, the crevices ooze, everything rises and falls, and circulation pulses through everywhere. We are beautiful, repulsive, and erotic all at once. When I look away, I find a world that is far too dry, contained, and civilized, in which we are rarely conscious of our vitality. I want to find hard proof that life does exist.

In conclusion, I am excited for whatever nutty ideas I will come up with next, and for the challenges I face in making those nutty ideas into smart ones. hmm..

I have found that there is something wrong with our lives. So much time is spent on the most complex thoughts. We often force ourselves to endure incredibly boring and miserable things for the sake of our supposed betterment. We tend to reward complexity, and criticize fun as immature, unimportant, even ignorant. Rarely do we notice the grandeur of the simple. We’ve forgotten about pleasure! It seems the pursuit of the complex and the neglect of the pleasurable are intricately tied. To further complicate matters, we get tied up in a myriad of values that we tell ourselves are important. But what about pleasure? What is more important than happiness? Why don’t we make euphoria the goal of life? I’d like to remind us all that there is another world out there to escape to, away from the cities and the nine-to-five and the American Dream.

Closing reception for the Paper Girl Project Northampton is this friday! If you're in the area, go! I donated a photograph to the project and hopefully it shall be there at that show.

Who: Me and lots of other super-cool artists.
What: Our work. On saturday it will be tossed at many unsuspecting villagers.
Where: The basement of Thornes Marketplace on Main Street in Northampton, Massachusetts.
When: 6-9pm.
Why: "I want to surprise them, going about their everyday lives and suddenly getting a present. I think unsuspected presents are the best, and giving presents without expecting anything in return is even better."

I spotted a trailhead recently, one that looked not unlike this one:

very innocuous, so I thought.

Well yesterday I wanted to go on a nice stroll in the woods with my dear friend luke. Thought we might get some fresh air, maybe find some wood sorrel to munch on... then go home after about an hour. Somehow this turned into the most intense hike I'd been on in years. It's a very long story. I'll let you know though, that it involved thousands of wild blueberries growing side-by-side with poisonous buckthorn which looks almost exactly the same, and probably the most impressive view I've ever seen in connecticut, and lots of soft moss under my bare feet which by the way is the best non-sexual feeling ever.
